The luxury Chuan Spa at Melbourne's Langham Hotel is a haven for contemplation, renewal and relaxation. The 1,060 square metre (11,410 square foot) spa and health club occupies two levels of the five-star hotel and provide hotel guests, day visitors and members with a state-of-the-art health club and a 15 metre indoor salt water pool and zero edge Jacuzzi with floor to ceiling fold back windows allowing expansive views of Melbourne’s skyline stretching from Southbank to Federation Square. Chuan Spa had a soft opening in February 2005 with an official Feng Shui blessing ceremony taking place on 26 July, 2005. The spa offers more than 40 specialty spa treatments in a setting inspired by the principles of a traditional Chinese Garden. Chuan Spa combines the finest traditions of the east and west.

In Chinese, Chuan means flowing water. Considered to be the source of life, water represents the re-birth and re-balancing of mind, body and soul in the Chinese culture. Melbourne’s Chuan Spa is created to provide treatments and facilities to restore balance and energy while promoting well being, relaxation and fitness. Chuan Spa offers a range of spa treatments and services that are based on the Traditions of Chinese Medicine (TCM) in a modern contemporary setting with an ambiance that is always calming and peaceful.

Designed by Melbourne based design firm, Bate & Webb, the inspiration for Chuan Spa evolved from the idea of a Chinese garden where men and women retreat from their everyday world to a place of calm. With fabric wall panels of silk, embossed with floral motifs, bamboo floor finishes and a warm, natural color palette, the emphasis is on an uncluttered atmosphere with soft, indirect light and an ambience of calm. The pebbles, brass water feature, curved hallways and timber panels capture the elements of a natural landscape in accordance with the guidelines of Melbourne Feng Shui Master, Jodi Brunner.

The eight treatment rooms, four of which are designed for dual services and private relaxation lounges, provide a location where couples and friends can share a spa experience together. Separate men’s and women’s wet areas mean that before or after a treatment, the aroma infused steam rooms, saunas, therapeutic snail showers, pool, Jacuzzi and outdoor deck provide a place for respite where the body and mind can be restored.

Featuring the Australian made Chuan Spa private label, consisting of 14 signature products, combined with European therapeutic, marine-based range from Thalgo, Chuan Spa offers a comprehensive list of 40 treatments including nine signature services using the exclusive Chuan spa lotions, mists and oils. Chuan Spa products were created exclusively for the Chuan Spa drawing on the time honored Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) which gives consideration for the powers of the five elements – wood – earth – metal – fire and water. Chuan products were created in consultation with a Chinese health care expert, with qualifications in Chinese Medicine, Naturopathy and traditional Chinese massage therapies. The range of healing, calming oils and body care products are based on Chinese heritage and tradition, and are used in the signatures treatments at Chuan Spa, Melbourne and available as retail and gift items.

Within Chuan Spa, the fitness centre offers twenty- four pieces of fitness equipment combining the latest technology in both cardio and resistance machines. Guests can enjoy a comprehensive full body work out with features such as a cardio theatre, 8 televisions or simply taking in the Melbourne City skyline. The fitness floor located on level 10 offers passive movement classes in a new movement studio including yoga and pilates.
